IELTS Reading Tips

Strategies to help you read faster, answer more accurately, and manage the clock under exam pressure.

  1. Skim first, then scan. Spend one to two minutes skimming each passage for its overall topic and paragraph structure before reading the questions closely. This gives you a mental map of where different types of information are likely to appear.
  2. Read the questions before hunting for answers. Underline keywords in each question — especially names, dates, numbers, and any words unlikely to be paraphrased — so you know exactly what to scan for in the passage.
  3. Expect paraphrasing, not exact matches. IELTS Reading rarely repeats the exact wording from the passage in the question. Practise recognising synonyms and reworded phrases, since this is the core skill the test is measuring.
  4. Manage your time strictly. With 60 minutes for 40 questions across three passages, aim to spend no more than 20 minutes per passage, including reading and answering. If you're stuck on one question, mark your best guess and move on.
  5. Answer every question, even if unsure. There's no penalty for wrong answers, so an educated guess is always better than leaving a blank space, particularly for True/False/Not Given questions where you have roughly a one-in-three chance.
  6. Understand the Not Given trap. A statement is False if it directly contradicts the passage, but Not Given if the passage simply doesn't mention that specific information. Don't infer or assume — base your answer only on what's stated.
  7. Respect word limits exactly. If a question says "no more than two words," writing three words means the answer is marked wrong even if the content is correct. Always double-check hyphenated words and numbers, which usually count as one word.
  8. Watch your spelling. Since answers must generally be copied from the passage, spelling mistakes will cost you the mark even if you clearly understood the passage correctly.
  9. Tackle matching-heading questions last within a passage. These typically take longer per question than other types, so it's often more efficient to secure the more straightforward question types first.
  10. Practise under timed conditions regularly. Reading speed and stamina build up gradually. Regularly completing full 60-minute practice sets, like the ones on this site, is more effective than only reading passages without a time limit.
